Project overview

The original Royal Philharmonic Society website was built without a responsive design pattern and, unsurprisingly, their audience was engaging with the website on smaller devices, so their fixed-width website simply wasn’t keeping pace.

The Royal Philharmonic Society also recognised that they needed to develop better online member services to reduce the levels of administration for their small team.

The goal for the initial project was to convert the website so it used a responsive design pattern. However, we also agreed that this was the perfect opportunity for Royal Philharmonic Society to switch to a better Content Management System as their original CMS was cumbersome and lacked features. In steps Craft CMS, our preferred Content Management System.

With a major extension to allow member registration and fully equipped members’ area in 2019, the website is now being successfully managed on a day-to-day basis by the Royal Philharmonic Society team.

The Royal Philharmonic Society website also includes a second website for the RPS Awards with both websites being managed within Craft CMS as it has multi-site capabilities.

In 2019, we extended the website’s capabilities of the Royal Philharmonic Society website by implementing a cost-effective solution to handle member registrations and ongoing subscriptions. We also created a members area with self service pages and an event booking system that allows for member early access bookings and tiered pricing based on membership level.

Integrations

Even more impressive are the integrations. Membership registration data is pushed to SalesForce and Campaign Monitor allowing the client to more easily manage and engage with their membership.

All these features were deliverable by Craft and two plugins, which meant there was no expensive custom development.

Direct Debit subscriptions

The Royal Philharmonic Society subscription model relies on rolling annual or monthly Direct Debit payments, so we developed a registration workflow that integrates with GoCardless — a third-party service that handles Direct Debits.

Craft Commerce

For all other payment handling, the Royal Philharmonic Society website uses Craft Commerce (a first-party plugin for Craft) so it can process event bookings. In turn, Craft Commerce is integrated with Stripe to handle the secure payments — creating a tidy solution for RPS team.
